Description

ABOUT THE WINERY:

Château d’Esclans is located twenty-five kilometers northwest of the ancient Roman city of Fréjus on the Mediterranean coast. The cellar, located in the center of the Var department, where most of the Provence AOC rosés are produced, was originally part of a castle dating back to before the 12th century. In 1201, Gérard De Villeneuve, a member of a wealthy Marseille family, took possession of the castle and a large part of the Vallée d´Esclans and subsequently ceded the castle to the Sauveur brothers Louis Ranque and François Alexandre Ranque.
In 1875, then, the two sold the property to Joseph Toussaint Caussemille; it later passed to the Perraud family and was purchased by Sacha Lichine, the current owner, in 2006. Today the estate has a total of 427 hectares, of which 140 are vineyards. In the estate, the variety that is given the most space is undoubtedly the grenache; Cave d’Esclan is in fact known for its old grenache vineyards, capable of giving grapes with highly concentrated juices. Among the other varieties we find, then, the cinsault, the merlot, the mourvèdre, the syrah and the Tibouren.
Ever since the purchase of the property, Sacha Lichine had his purpose very clear: to create the greatest Rosés in the world.
