Description

ABOUT THE WINERY:

The Hugel family has its roots in Alsatian history as early as the 15th century. About two hundred years later, in the midst of the Thirty Years War, the Swiss Hans Ulrich Hugel settled in the village of Riquewihr to accept the prestigious assignment entrusted to him by the Corporation of Winegrowers, for the enhancement of the region. Thirteen generations later, Hugel has become a name of excellence for production in Alsace, with a deep wine vocation and an indissoluble bond with the territory, accompanied by a spirit of courageous pioneering. The mission of the winery has been carried on from father to son, helping to consecrate the winemaking tradition in European history. The family vineyards extend on the Grand Cru slopes that surround the small village, developing for about 30 hectares of vineyard area. The territory is characterized by one of the driest climates in all of France, given its distance from the sea and the natural protection offered by the Vosges mountains. Precisely due to the morphology of the region, the soils of the Riqewihr hills are a mosaic of soil types which, thanks to the experience of the family’s winemakers, can express all their qualities in the grapes grown. The Hugel production is characterized by a cultivation without fertilizers, a minimum yield for the vines and a manual harvest to choose only the best bunches. After vinification, aging takes place in the cellars of the historic Hugel building dating back to the 15th century, which houses oak barrels so old as to hold international records. This is how labels of unchanged quality are born, a worthy representation of the authentic nature of the region and of a dedication handed down through the centuries. The sip of the fruits of the Hugel family is a revelation, the discovery of an ancient and at the same time extremely contemporary character.
